The Wi-Fi you currently enjoy could be a whole lot faster this time next year. This according to The Verge, which says the Wi-Fi Alliance have begun certifying mobile devices and routers for a new standard called WiGig. 

The faster Wi-Fi standard will reportedly be introduced in "marquee" devices next year, but only works in a short range of 10 metres or less, say the Wi-Fi Alliance. As such, the faster speeds will not be as freely accessible as Wi-Fi is on current routers. “We talk about it as an in-room technology,” says Kevin Robinson, VP of marketing at the Wi-Fi Alliance.

WiGig is set to work on the 802.11 ad bandwidth which could theoretically offer up to 8 Gbps speeds. The current standard for flagship mobile devices and routers is 802.11 ac, which can reach up 4.5 Gbps. To that end, WiGig could make VR and 4K streaming far easier to access and experience. Whether or not South Africa will have such speeds in new devices next year, remains to be seen.
