Geek News Highlights - The Stars Await Edition
By Ryan Noik 4 February 2015 | Categories: newsLatest Humble Bundle, worth buying, it is
Star Wars aficionados take note: the latest Humble Bundle is a cornucopia of Star Wars goodness. Included in the bundle is the superb and classic role playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the almost equally as good action-adventure Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy and Dark Forces. Paying more than the average nets you Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Star Wars Republic Commando. Still not satisfied? Well, then part with $12 or more and you can add Star Wars Empire at War, Star Wars The Force Unleashed and Star Wars The Force Unleashed II to your playlist.
For our money, just the first two games alone would be worth the purchase price, especially if you haven’t played them before. However, taken as a whole, in the paraphrased words of the immortal Obi-Wan Kenobi, these are the games you are looking for (no Jedi mind trick needed).
From Star Wars to Stargate
Still staying amongst the stars, the latest news to emerge is that the Stargate reboot has gone and found itself a couple of writers. More specifically, it is Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods who will be responsible for conjuring the precise set of words that will, hopefully, reawaken the adventure to worlds not our own.
Wright and Woods are also worked on the script for the sequel to another very recognisable name out of the 90s – Independence Day 2.
In case you didn’t already know, director Roland Emmerich will be directing both Independence Day 2 and Stargate; and apparently Emmerich is quite serious about making a go of it, with the Stargate reboot kicking off a planned trilogy.
Star Wars characters joining Madame Tussauds
Who needs to wait for the next Star Wars flick to come out, when Madame Tussauds just unveiled a select number of wax character sculptures, sure to get all those wannabe Padawans many selfie moments. The wax sculptures will go up on display at Madame Tussauds London venue as of May this year, and will feature 11 different set recreations from the first six Episodes, with the interior of the Millenium Falcon being a particular standout in our books.
Running for six months, it will end just in time for the hype surrounding Episode VII - The Force Awakens to swell into a state of near frenzy. A total of 16 characters in all will be on display, including fan favourites like Yoda and Chewbacca. No word on whether Darth Vader will be making an appearance, but it wouldn't be a Star Wars event without him as far as we're concerned. Click on the short behind-the-scenes video below to see how these wax sculptures came to life.
Superbowl brings yet another Jurassic World trailer to the fore
In case you didn’t already, here’s a reason to love the Superbowl, it invariably means some pretty good ads (yes, there actually is such a thing) or better yet, new movie trailers. In this case, the forthcoming new movie receiving a new trailer is none other than Jurassic World (and trust us, it’s a great deal better than the previous one).
Cue large complacent crowd, hungry flying dinosaurs, and, oh, Chris Pratt pointing out the obvious - that making new dinosaurs is probably not a good idea. Anyway, if you haven’t seen it already, take a look at the trailer below, which strikes all the right – and familiar – notes, if you remember the score from the original.
80th Anniversary Monopoly to feature real money
It may be stored somewhere deep inside your cupboard, but most South African households have a version of Monopoly they pull out come the festive season, or whenever Eskom decides to the plug. Now there may be another reason that Monopoly will find its way into homes, as this year marks the 80th Anniversary for this wildly popular board game, which has still managed to remain memorable amid the high-def, fast paced action of next-gen consoles. To celebrate its 80th birthday, Hasbro is releasing 80 Monopoly sets in France with real cash inside, in this case Euros (€20 580 to be precise).
The move comes as brand manager for Hasbro's French branch, Florence Galliard received feedback from customers, who said that they would love it if they could find real money inside, but then again who wouldn't?
Monopoly can get a little heated at the best of times, when players need to start mortgaging their fictitious houses just to pay to get out of jail. Just how heated it will get with real money at stake? We're guessing that many friendships could come to an end because of this.
Surfing, meet Renaissance art
Surfing as a pastime has long been associated with free spirits, those who march to the beat of their own drum and well, alternative types. Perhaps therefore, the marriage between surfboards and European Renaissance art shouldn’t be entirely unexpected.
Still, the result between French Boom-art and UWL Surfboard is striking to say the least. The former is perhaps better known for their limited edition skateboards; however, their treatment on the waveriders is nothing short of sumptuous. If you are considering ponying up for one of the distinctive designs, be warned – you’re going to have to open your wallet wide; they cost a gulp-inducing €1 890 (R24 700).
