Google has launched Google Go, a new app offering a lighter and faster way to search, according to the company. The app congregates things such as search, voice search, image, gifs, weather and YouTube in one small app.

Go is aimed at users who might experience patchy connectivity, high data costs and low RAM and storage space on their phones.

Taking up about 3.53 MB, Google Go is quick to download without using much data. It makes use of the latest version of Google’s compression algorithm, allowing for up to 40% less data to display search results. Search results are cached on the device so users can quickly re-access previous searches, even when they’re offline, without incurring further data costs. When there’s no internet access, Google Go retries failed search requests in the background and lets you know as soon as the results are ready. According to Google, web pages load quickly, even in data-saving mode or on 2G connections.

What we found interesting is that when conducting a search, Google Go will provide trending topics. While you can search for images, there are predefined themes, such as inspirational quotes, wallpapers and nature images to browse through, with ditto for gifs. Below the search operations, you will find quick links to apps such as Instagram and Twitter.

Google Go is available from in 26 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Google Play Store. It will come pre-installed on all Android Oreo (Go edition) devices, available in stores soon. It is available for devices running Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean) and above.
