A while back Facebook announced that it will ban cryptocurrency ads on its platform, noting that many of these advertisers “are not operating in good faith”. Now Google has done the same, taking steps to restrict Cryptocurrencies and related content on its network. This will come into effect in June 2018, when a new update to its financial services policy comes into play. According to a post regarding its AdWords policy, serving restrictions will also be placed on binary options, as well as initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges, cryptocurrency wallets, and cryptocurrency trading advice.
Google didn’t stop there also taking a stand against Contracts for Difference, rolling spot forex, and financial spread betting. Companies wanting to advertise these will now have to be certified by Google, and would have to proof that they are licensed by the appropriate financial services authorities in the country amongst others.
According to the BBC, Google took these steps in order to protect consumers against the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies and the trading thereof. The new restrictions will affect ads in search results, on YouTube and also its ad platforms.
