Over the past weekend, news broke of an internal memo at Google that went viral. The memo in question was more a manifesto, with employee James Damore spreading his thoughts on diversity in the workplace and why it was not a feasible option for Google, especially given Damore's perceived beliefs on the differences between men and women.

Needless to say, the reaction to the manifesto was overwhelmingly negative, and now Google has taken action by firing the individual, according to a report from Bloomberg. Damore confirmed the news by emaiing Bloomberg about his firing, noting that he was let go for "perpetuating gender stereotypes".

When the manifesto initially went viral within Google, VP of diversity, Danielle Brown, stated that Damore's views are not ones that the company endorsed. Brown did, however, note that Google welcomed opposing viewpoints. "Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions," said Brown.

While Damore is no longer a part of the company, the debate around this issue is still far from over, with Google recently being accused of systematically underpaying its female employees. As such, the company has some ways to go before convincing the public that it truly espouses and implements gender equality in the workplace.
