Google reportedly rebranding Android Wear as Wear OS

Wearables, and smartwatches in particular, have lost their lustre of late. That has not stopped companies from producing devices, however, which means that an operating system is needed in order to bring all the hardware together. Aiming to be the choice for non-Apple offerings is Google and its Android Wear platform.
With Google I/O 2018 happening in May, and the release of Android O shortly thereafter, some sharp eyed sleuths at Android Police have spotted evidence that Android Wear could be getting a rebranding, with the new name of 'Wear OS' bandied about. There was also a logo spotted, which takes inspiration from the Google one and forms it into a 'W', looking a lot like the Warner Music version.
The move to shake up the Android Wear brand makes plenty of sense, especially as Engadget points out that Android Wear devices didn't featured heavily in IDC's Top Five wearable company shipments for Q4 2017.
As for what software improvements or features will be added to Wear OS, remains to be seen, with Google I/O likely the best opportunity to see any forthcoming developments from Google.
