HTC's Vive VR headset going set for pre-order on 29 February
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 12 January 2016 | Categories: newsLast year at CES, VR headsets were all the rage, as many a tech manufacturer provided their take on the concept. Now a year later and a few of those prototype units are readying for a retail release. One such manufacturer is HTC, with their Vive VR headset destined for pre-order status come 29 February.
The confirmation comes via the Telegraph, which recently chatted with HTC CEO Cher Wang. She told the Telegraph that the Taiwanese company would be launching head first into the VR platform, not only to diversify their product portfolio, but also save their struggling smartphone business.
At this stage, pre-orders are limited to select regions in Europe, the US and Asia. Oddly though, a price tag for the headset is undisclosed. While Samsung's Gear VR is readily available in the US for $100, it does not dive as deep on applications as say the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift or indeed the Vive VR offerings. As such, HTC could likely aim to come in under the Oculus Rift's $600 (R10 126) pricing.
Whether or not this venture into VR yields the positive effect HTC is hoping for, remains to be seen.
