June 2015
It’s difficult to overestimate the genius of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, and with Love & Mercy director Bill Pohlad is trying to bring a touch of that to the big screen. Paul Dano and John Cusack play the younger and the elder Wilson, hooking us up with the story behind his rise and fall. Wilson’s story is one of the great rock ‘n roll tales, so we hope they don’t mess it up.
Best Bit: 0:29 when the dog gets into the recording action.
The Gunman
March 2015
Former Special Forces member Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) is a man with a couple of skeletons in the closet trying to play it straight. The Gunman is produced by the same folks that did Taken, so it’s only natural that his former lover is abducted along the way and it will take a fair amount of bullets to get her back. There’s a bit of a 007 connection with Javier Bardem playing a villain, while the man that many are vouching for as the next James Bond, Idris Elba, also stars.
Best Bit: 0:37’s highly accurate shooting.
Frozen Fever
March 2015
What do you do to ride the coattails of the highest-grossing animated film in history? Walt Disney Pictures follows it up with a short movie playing exclusively with its new Cinderella live action movie.
Frozen Fever’s trailer has now debuted, and again stars Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and, the star of the show Olaf the snowman. We’re sure a million little hearts are racing at the news.
Best Bit: 0:21 when Olaf coughs up a snowball.
Hot Pursuit
May 2015
Hot Pursuit sees the unusual tag team of Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara (Modern Family) take on the cop/buddy/road/comedy movie genre. Witherspoon plays a cop who needs to protect a drug dealer’s widow, and if nothing else it should be good to see Witherspoon’s comedy chops again, since that started off her career with Legally Blonde all the way back in 2001.
Best Bit: 0:45’s car filled with “baking powder”.
Zombeavers
March 2015
As Monty Python said: Now for something completely different. They might be cute and fuzzy when alive, but apparently beavers become the complete opposite once they come return from the dead. This phenomena is captured wonderfully in Zombeavers, which goes with the promotional line of “They’ll dam you to hell!”. There’s not truly much more to add to that madness, so just watch the trailer below.
Best bit: 1:39 when she turns into one.
A Perfect Day
April 2015
Maybe only noteworthy because of the great Benicio Del Toro, A Perfect Day’s trailer does little to impress. The movie tells the tale of conflict zone aid workers in the Balkans trying to get a body out of a well, and also stars Tim Robbins. If you are looking for a movie about people trying to find rope, you’ve hit the jackpot.
Best Bit: 0:07 - the translator’s face when he must tell the guard not to wash the car.
