Instagram hits one billion, launches video service
By Staff Writer 22 June 2018 | Categories: newsWith Twitter and Facebook being eschewed by younger generations, the place to be is Instagram. The service has announced that it hit one billion monthly active users mark, close to eight years after its launch in 2010. Instagram did not slow down after it hit 100 million monthly active users in Feb 2013, crossing the 500 million mark in June 2016. Two years later the company has now doubled that amount.
The announcement coincides with Instagram's possible competitor to YouTube – IGTV. This is a new app based around video, with users being able to upload vertical videos. Unlike Instagram, IGTV videos can be up to an hour long, with videos being able to be viewed through the Instagram app too.
With a number of content creators not happy with YouTube's policies, and the service itself struggling with regulating content, both creators and advertisers might just turn to IGTV as the new place to be. The app is available for download on iOS and Android.
