Intel has unveiled a new CPU range at Computex 2017, and it's a new milestone for the company. More specifically, the lineup features the first desktop CPU that Intel has developed with 18 cores. The range has been christened the X Series, and the flagship offering of the lot is the i9-7980XE, a.k.a. the Extreme Edition.

Given its 'extreme' nature, Intel is aiming to sell this CPU for around $1 999, according to Engadget, which places in the price bracket of someone looking to build a truly well specced desktop gaming PC. 

What does the $2k buy you? Well for one, it's said to outperform AMD's recently released 16-core Threadripper CPU, which makes the Intel offering one of the best consumer processors we'll likely see in 2017. Added to this is the ability to support 4K gaming, as well as the ability to do Twitch broadcasts on HD. 

Should the 18 core model in the Intel X Series be a bit too rich for your blood, the company also has 10, 12, 14 and 16 core options available, with the bottom of the range variant said to cost an estimated $999. 

Still on show at Computex 2017 in Taipei, Intel has not confirmed when the X Series will be available outside the US. Until then, give this video below a watch.
