The BBC has shaken things up a bit, with the recent announcement of Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch, Attack the Block) as the new Doctor Who. Whittaker is the 13th person to play the iconic time travelling character, but perhaps more importantly is the first female to earn the role.

BBC One, which will be airing the new episodes of Doctor Who in Britain, made the announcement via Twitter with the accompanying video below.

The character of the Doctor, famously has the ability to regenerate, hence the reason why so many actors have played the role in the past. With Whittaker now in the lead role, will her assistant be a man?

We'll likely find out at the end of the year, when Doctor Who routinely airs its Christmas special.
