We first saw the LG G5 smartphone at WMC16 earlier this year, where it immediately caught our eye thanks to its modular design (read our hands-on plus an interview with LG Mobile's director of Global Communications). The LG G5 is now making its way to South Africa, where it will be hitting shops come 15 April on all networks with a prepaid price of R11 800.

For your money you receive a range of top end specs, not the least being both a regular (16 MP) plus a special 135-degree wide-angle camera (8 MP). Although it sounds gimmicky, when put in practice it’s actually pretty useful, capturing a large amount of extra space that would have gone amiss. Taking it from here are a number of impressive specifications, including the 5.3" Quad HD always-on display (554 ppi), the in-demand Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset running two dual core CPUs (2.15 GHz, 1.6 GHz), 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage space with the ability to add an extra 200 GB via microSD card.

Dual cameras on the back of the LG G5

The G5’s hotness factor is of course derived from its modular design, meaning you can slot in some enhancements if need be. Our pick would be the Cam Plus add-on, which is designed specifically around the LG’s dual cameras. Shooting pics on your phone using one hand is a bit of a struggle, with the Cam Plus helping out in this regard providing much needed grip and better control. There are buttons for power, shutter, record and zoom, while also adding a bump in the G5’s battery capacity (2800 mAH) with an extra 1200 mAh.

Another enhancement is the Hi-Fi Plus add-on which supports 32-bit 384 KHz high-definition audio playback. Developed in conjunction with B&O PLAY, once slotted in the Hi-Fi Plus provides a boost in the audio quality, both in speaker mode as well as when using headphones.

There’s no news on what these extras will cost or how the network providers will bundle them. LG SA also mentioned that a number of the G5’s Friends, including the quite awesome 360 CAM camera, the 360 VR virtual reality display, the Rolling Bot video recorder toy, and the Tone Platinum and H3 by B&O PLAY earphones, will arrive 22 April. Takealot will be a major retail partner for these Friends, with no prices available just yet.
