LG’s new range of QNED TVs: A new era for colour
By Staff Writer 18 July 2022 | Categories: sponsored contentIn the world of TV, a decade of technological innovation has pushed the limits of picture quality, brightness, and colour reproduction. Today, you can have a stunning 8K display running at 120 Hz that blurs the lines between display and reality. But there’s a lot more to the latest display technologies than meets the eye. And if a TV is the canvas for the art of modern cinema, it’s important to know that not all are painted equally.
LG’s latest range of QNED TVs have arrived on South African shores and have set a new benchmark for backlit TVs in terms of colour reproduction and quality. But what is it about QNED that makes other displays pale in comparison? Here’s what you need to know about the tech behind the TVs that are revolutionising how we experience colour on screen.
Combining cutting-edge colour tech
LG’s QNED TVs combine NanoCell and Quantum Dot technologies, which has never been done before. By doing this, they are able to deliver higher quality pictures with deeper blacks and more vibrant colours than was previously possible on LCD TVs. Quantum Dot tech (which is what the Q stands for in QNED) uses semiconducting nanocrystals to enhance colour reproduction. NanoCell, on the other hand, uses nanoparticles to filter and refine colour impurities on a microscopic level, resulting in purer and more accurate image quality. This takes the 4K and 8K viewing experience to new heights, as duller tones no longer filter through to muddy overall brightness and colour accuracy. With these two revolutionary technologies coming together in a single display, QNED brings cinematic experiences to life with an explosion of colours you have to see to believe.
The evolution of LED
Traditional LCD TVs that are direct or edge-lit often suffer from backlight bleeding and, as a result, darker parts of the screen are never truly dark. To address this common drawback, LED improved LCD displays by using smaller, more efficient diodes for backlighting. This allowed backlighting to be split up into multiple areas using local dimming, which meant that certain parts of an LED screen could be dimmed more precisely to reduce backlight bleeding.
LG has taken this a step further by adding Mini-LED technology to some of their latest QNED displays. Whereas conventional LED TVs only have a few hundred LEDs, QNED Mini-LED TVs have up to 30,000 mini-LEDs in their backlighting. These mini-LEDs are not only greater in number, but they are also smaller and more densely distributed, allowing them to produce far higher peak brightness, crisp picture quality, and richer colours. They also feature Full-Array Local Dimming, with an impressive 2,500 dimming zones, to reduce bleeding or the ‘halo effect’ and deliver deep blacks in dark scenes. With many more mini-LEDs and dimming zones, QNED Mini-LEDs boast a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, whereas your typical LCD display only goes up to roughly 1000:1.
QNED Mini-LED TVs have also been certified via independent third-party testing to capture a wider colour range and deliver rich colours that remain brilliant even at maximum brightness levels. These colours are reproduced at 100% colour consistency measured to angles of ±30°. This means you’ll always experience rich and breath-taking colours – no matter how bright the screen is, what genre of movie you’re watching, or what angle you’re viewing the screen from.
The language of dreams
Setting up a home cinema has become about so much more than bigger screens and more pixels. It is also about the vibrancy and quality of the colour that you see on screen. In the words of Paul Gauguin, “colour is a deep and mysterious language. It is the language of dreams.” And with LG’s QNED TVs bringing together some of today’s leading display technologies, we can truly experience the full spectrum of colour as filmmakers intended.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the latest LG QNED model that arrived in South Africa at the start of this year. The first model to arrive was the QNED806, which will be followed by the QNED85 and QNED99 later in the year.
The LG QNED99 is the flagship of the QNED line-up and comes standard in stunning 8K at 120 Hz. The QNED85 is available in the same sizes as the QNED99 but is the first 4K mini-LED option in the range. Lastly, the QNED806 features Quantum Dot and NanoCell technologies, so expect vivid and enriched colours that will be appreciated by gamers and movie-lovers alike.
Of course, when it comes to experiencing what these displays truly have to offer, seeing is believing. To learn more about LG’s QNED TVs, take a first-hand look at your nearest retailer showroom and visit lg.com/za/qned-tvs.
