Marvel's next comic book Iron Man is black teenager Riri Williams
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 7 July 2016 | Categories: newsOne of Marvel's most iconic characters is set for a shake up, as Time recently broke the news that Tony Stark will be stepping down from Iron Man responsibilities for the time being and handing over duties to someone else. That person is not James Rhodes (War Machine) or indeed any other of the Avengers, but rather a black teenage tech prodigy named Riri Williams.
Following the events of the recently published Civil War II comic books, Stark has had to take some time off from being Iron Man, prompting a new character to assume the post. Readers were first introduced to Ms. Williams in Invincible Iron Man #9, where she reverse engineered her own version of the Iron Man armour. With an eye for talent, Stark recruited her as an apprentice of sorts.
This is not the first time Marvel has shaken things up as far as iconic characters go. A couple of years ago, Mjolnir deemed a new person worthy of being Thor, and Miles Morales became the new Spider-Man shortly thereafter. As such, Williams' introduction continues the trend of Marvel aiming to aid more gender and race diversity to its comics.
How fans will respond to the change remains to be seen, but we're sure that writer Brian Michael Bendis, noted as the primary architect for the Ultimate Marvel Universe, will do a stellar job. The new Invincible Iron Man series will arrive in the next quarter, according to Marvel.
