Disney and Vans celebrate 90 years of the Mouse
By Staff Writer 24 August 2018 | Categories: newsIt might seem like a highly unlikely collaboration, but it actually works. In honour of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday (and a shared South California heritage), Disney and Vans are bringing out some special new kicks.
Vault by Vans and Disney are collaborating with four iconic artists – John Van Hamersveld, Mister Cartoon, Geoff McFetridge and Taka Hayashi, to create a one-of-a-kind artwork featuring the beloved Disney Mouse that started the Disney empire.
Each of the artists’ custom Mickey Mouse renditions are featured on Vans’ iconic OG Sk8-Hi LX shoe, as well as a short-sleeved tee. We are actually quite surprised by the designs on offer, especially since it presents Mickey in a rather off-beat fashion.
Best known for his psychedelic patterns and vibrant color schemes, John Van Hamersveld is a pioneer in the worlds of art, music, and surfing. For this collection, Van Hamersveld produced bright, punchy Mickey Mouse graphics.
Going a bit darker and playing around with the black-and-white origins of the Mouse, is Mister Cartoon, a Mexican-American artist born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He is recognised for his richly detailed hand-rendered style of fine line tattooing—a technique that uses diluted black ink to create shadows and depth.
Geoff McFetridge, Canadian designer, illustrator and animator, takes the red, yellow, iconic black and white of Mickey and plays around with it in his design.
We are more partial to Vans mainstay, Taka Hayashi, who completes the collection with a design that features an unexpected hit of pink, conveying a Mickey Mouse inspired hot air balloon.
The Disney x Vans collaboration is set to retail from $78 to $100 and launches globally on 25 August, but whether we will see it locally remains to be seen.
