Microsoft is reportedly set to make a significant announcement later this week, with Bloomberg noting that the company is in advanced talks to acquire coding site GitHub. With Microsoft one of the biggest contributors of code to the repository, along with the likes of Google, Apple and Amazon, according to The Verge, the move would fall in line with CEO Satya Nadella's plans of making the company more open source.

Currently, Microsoft has an estimated 1000 employees pushing code towards GitHub, with the site even hosting the original Windows File Manager source code on its domain. With GitHub valued at roughly $2 billion, it's unclear at this stage how much the acquisition would cost Microsoft, or indeed how much the company has proposed as on offer at this stage.

Also unclear is Microsoft's precise endgame with such an acquisition, added to the fact that some developers may not be as comfortable anymore sending its source code to GitHub with the knowledge that such a large corporate like Microsoft now owns the site.

With an announcement of the deal imminent, it should prove interesting to see how Microsoft leverage the acquisition and how developers react to it.
