Acer has been onboard Google’s Chromebook project for a while now, refining these machines that provide all computing services through the Chrome web browser. The Taiwanese company has now rolled out the newest model in its Chromebook 11 line, with the CB3-131 destined for South Africa, landing in Q2 for R4 500. 

With a 11.6” display and 1366x768 resolution, it features non-glare ComfyView technology which, according to Acer, limits eye-strain. At 1.1 kg it should be a breeze to carry around, while Acer also improved the unit’s style, thanks to a nano-imprinted pattern for the cover that provides a better look and feel compared to previous models. Acer believes this cover also boosts durability, with the Chromebook 11 reinforced “to handle extra-stressful environments”. It is claimed to be able to deal with up to 60 kg of downward force on the top cover, while the corners can tolerate up to 60 cm drops without damage. The reinforced case results in greater resistance to twisting and stress.

Under the bonnet is an Intel Celeron quad-core processor (model not specified), and although this isn’t the fastest available, it needn’t be since most services are cloud based. The Chromebook 11 also features 2 GB or 4 GB of memory and a 16 GB or 32 GB eMMC storage.

Port wise users have access to 3.0, USB 2.0 and HDMI ports, while Bluetooth 4.0 and faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi should keep connectivity speedy. Battery life stands at nine hours according to Acer, catering for that uncalled for overtime after a full day’s work.

As the number one Chromebook brand according the Gartner, it should be interesting to see how well the Acer CB3-131 does locally. Much like all other electronics, the current weak rand has an impact on local cost and consumer spending patterns. Will its R4 500 recommended starting price be enough to entice the market?  We’ll see in Q2.
