The heritage of BMW's 2-series, and more specifically its 1970s 2002 model, are well documented by now, bringing the Bavarian carmaker out of near liquidation. To that end, the new 2-series lineup that BMW unveiled last year had a lot to live up to. It appears it has met expectations, as BMW have now introduced a M2 Coupe to the lineup. It will take the place of the M235i as the most powerful car in the range, and succeeds the M1 in terms of small but powerful cars in the eyes of BMW.

Now that we've provided a little background, let's get to the good stuff. Under the bonnet, BMW has integrated a 3.0 litre, six-cylinder engine, which is paired with the company's M TwinPower Turbo technology to deliver a substantial 272 kW of power. The sizeable power output is accompanied by 500 Nm of torque to ensure the can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.3 seconds. This means the M2 Coupe could be a great car for track days, or perhaps even grand touring, as it tops out at 250 km/h.

Added to this is an aggressive styling, particularly in the front end, with BMW taking plenty of design cues from its M3 model. Furthermore, are 19" aluminium wheels and lightweight front and rear axles.

BMW has slated the M2 Coupe for arrival in its native Germany (and the rest of Europe) for mid-2016. Hopefully though, SA drivers won't have to wait much longer than that to see it here. Click on the video below to see the M2 Coupe do its thing. We'd also advise scrolling a bit further down, as a few more images are included.
