New Nike Air VaporMax takes air cushioned shoes to the next level
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 18 March 2016 | Categories: newsThis week Nike has been showing off some of its most advanced offerings at its Innovation 2016 event in New York City. Along with a pair of self-lacing shoes, the HyperAdapt 1.0, Nike also showcased what they call the "pinnacle in Air". This took the form of the Nike Air VaporMax shoe, which is the latest iteration in their Air Max lineup. The company begun the line in 1987, and this year's model is perhaps the most lightweight and innovative to date.
What sets this model apart from previous ones is the VaporMax Air unit, which is the inflated plastic sole. "Where previous Air units had to be insulated by a secondary rubber layer for protection and improved durability, new innovation allows designers to incorporate the Air and exterior layer into one holistic VaporMax Air unit. And where previous units needed to be shaped with inflexible structural areas, the new unit can independently maintain its given form, with elasticity," says Nike.
This is paired with a Flyknit upper, Nike's go-to material of late, which sheds plenty of weight according to the apparel company. Precisely how much is unclear, as they have not detailed its weight specifications.
The release date for this model is also a mystery, with Nike asking interested consumers to sign up for its Nike+ service in order to stay in the loop.
