It seems like Hollywood wants to continue to believe in movie sales instead of streaming. Bloomberg is reporting that a number of Hollywood studios, led by Walt Disney Co. are preparing to announce a digital movie buying platform. This will allow users to purchase movies online and watch them whenever and on any digital device.

According to Bloomberg, several big Hollywood movie studios have signed up for the service, including 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures, with an official announcement imminent.

With DVD sales taking a knock Stateside (down 10% year on year) and a lacklustre 2017 at the box office, at least so far, studios are on the prowl for money making opportunities.

Such an online sales portal has been tried before, but this is the first time a concerted effort is being put into it. Disney introduced Disney Movies Anywhere in 2014, but other studios were pushing a for a service dubbed UltraViolet.

Whether this offering will succeed in the face of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, and of course platforms such as iTunes and Google Play where you can purchase movies already, remains to be seen. We’ll keep you updated with further developments.
