Last week Friday, in the wee hours of the morning, Japanese gaming company Nintendo officially launched its Switch hybrid console. Initially intrigued by the reveal video that accompanied the Nintendo Switch announcement late last year, the finer details of this new console were unknown. That, however, has changed over the past few days, and with that in mind, this is what you need to know about the Nintendo Switch.

First and foremost, the Nintendo Switch will be landing in South Africa on 3 March, the same date it is slated for launch in other select regions. Local distributor for Nintendo, the Core Group confirmed as much to Gearburn. Price though remains a little harder to pin down, but Stateside it is expected to retail for $300 (R4 066).  

As far as the different elements comprising the Switch goes, there's the main console which features a 6.2" display (1280x720), as well as two detachable Joy-Con Controllers either side. The Joy-Con controllers also function independently, akin to the Wii Remotes. Delving deeper into the console, it will feature 32 GB of internal storage (rather small in our opinion), with the ability to expand via a microSDHC or microSDXC port on the console.

Charging the handheld console is facilitated via USB Type-C, with Nintendo estimating a far ranging two-and-a-half to six hours worth of playtime from a full charge. Added to this will be Wi-Fi functionality and the ability to wirelessly pair up to eight different Joy-Con controllers to one console.

While we now have a better idea of  what the Nintendo Switch is packing, it's still unclear at this stage how it will fare against the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of gaming performance. Nevertheless, take another gander at the Nintendo Switch reveal video below.
