Nintendo at E3 2015 (Part 1) - World Champs, Super Smash Bros.
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 15 June 2015 | Categories: newsNintendo has always done things a little differently, and E3 2015 shows the Japanese company's unique approach to things. Unlike its compatriots, which often unveil all their developments and content in one showcase event, Nintendo has chosen to split its E3 into three distinct livestreams.
The first was a nearly five hour long World Championship tournament, with some of the best gamers in the world duking it out over Nintendo designed Super Mario Maker levels. The second, was a bevy of content set to debut for Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. The third livestream is scheduled for tomorrow, with Twitch subscribers able to view it live. This Nintendo Direct event will be the biggest of all three and many hope (including ourselves) that the Japanese gaming company will detail the mysterious NX console.
World Championships
After making its return from a 25 year long hiatus, the Nintendo World Championships was an unveiling event essentially posing as a tournament at E3 2015. As such, along with a series of matches that pitted gamers against one another while playing the recently retitled Super Mario Maker., Nintendo also showcased Earthbound Beginnings for the Wii U and Blast Ball, but more about those a little later.
Mario Maker will allow gamers to create playable levels as insanely difficult as possible, with all manner of obstacle up for use. A prime example of this, is the level that John Numbers and Cosmo Wright (the World Championship finalists) had to overcome. Despite its innocent enough look, we advise taking a gander at the video below from about the 3:30 mark, to see just how intense Mario Maker can be.
Super Smash Bros.
During the early parts of the Nintendo World Championships, details about new content arriving for Super Smash Bros. in the form of a cross-platform update emerged. Along with the news, a 18-minute long video also debuted, with new characters Ryu (Street Fighter) and Roy (Fire Emblem) joining the roster.
Both characters, along with a number of others from Nintendo's other franchises and series like Splatoon and Mega Man are available to purchase on the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. Along with these characters, gamers can also purchase a new fighting stage in the form of Suzaka Castle. All of this content is available to purchase at roughly $4 each, with a series of Mii fighter costumes set to roll out with this latest update for Super Smash Bros.
Earthbound Beginnings
Last on Nintendo's list of detailed games will be familiar to those gamers who still remember the days of 8-bit back in 1989. Originally released as Mother on the Nintendo Famicom in Japan, this new game titled Earthbound Beginnings will be the first english language title under the Earthbound franchise.
Along with releasing a trailer for the game, Nintendo confirmed that Earthbound Beginnings is available for users to purchase in the Nintendo eShop, although availability is limited to select markets. Furthermore, Earthbound Beginnings will exclusively be played via the Wii U's virtual console.
The game itself looks quite weird, and sees gamers interact with everything from poltergeists and restaurant owners, to Bigfoot and church members, all while trying to look for your missing mother. It that piqued your interest, or you're in the mood for some gaming nostalgia, click on the trailer below.
