Nvidia has a new GPU to mark the midway point of 2016. Christened the GeForce (10 Series) GTX 1060, it's a new mid-range GPU offering that the company says packs all its latest technologies into a relatively wallet-friendly $249. 

While value for money in the PC gaming market is certainly one reason for this GPU's unveiling, The Verge notes that it could also be in response to AMD's recently debuted Radeon RX480 graphics card, which has proved to be a new favorite among reviewers. 

In terms of specifications, the GTX 1060 is based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture, and boasts 1280 CUDA cores. This delivers a standard speed clocked at 1506 MHz, and a boosted speed of 1708 MHz. Memory registers at 8 Mbps with 6 GB of GDDR5 on board. Furthermore, Nvidia says this new GPU is VR ready, also featuring compatibility with the company's own G-SYNC and Game Stream platforms. 

Nvidia plans to release the GeForce GTX 1060 globally on 19 June. Whether South Africa also falls into that launch window is unclear at this stage.
