After establishing itself locally last year, Chinese brand Oppo is continuing to slowly introduce more models into the South African market. The latest is the A74 5G, a R7 500 device that looks like a compelling offering in the midrange space.

For this price you receive a 6.5" 2400 x 1080 (FHD+) LCD plus screen, with a 90 Hz refresh rate and a 405 ppi pixel density. This combines well with the 90.5% screen to body ratio, while Oppo also mentions the phone comes with All-day AI Eye Comfort, which allows for automatic screen colour and brightness adjustment dependent on the user’s surroundings.

The brains behind the operation is the octocore Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G system-on-a-chip, running up to 2.0 GHz. Combined with the 6 GB RAM (LPDDR4X) and 128 GB of storage space you should be good to go for most tasks. Impressively, the A74 5G also features 18 W fast charging, which should be able to juice your 5000 mAh battery without waiting ages.

As far as cameras are concerned, the A74 5G makes all the right moves by including a 48 MP main, 8 MP ultra-wide, 2 MP macro and 2 MP mono at the back. This while a 16 MP f2.4 camera takes care of selfies.

Importantly, the A74 also contains a similar iridescent colouring as the Reno5, which looks amazing in real life.

In all, the Oppo A74 looks like a decent offering, also counting its super-fast 5G abilities. Oppo notes a South African retail price of R7 499, available for purchase and contracts from R399 p/m at participating Vodacom and MTN stores nationwide.
