Overwatch registers 7 million players in first week of release
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 3 June 2016 | Categories: newsIn the world of gaming, the hype machine is often hit and miss. Just look at the differing fates of Destiny and Fallout 4. That said, the fanfare surrounding games is sometimes well founded, and given the recently numbers that Blizzard has detailed about Overwatch, which was officially released last week (24 May), the MMO game is shaping up as a resounding success.
According to a blog post yesterday, Overwatch has racked up a massive 7 million players, across the PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC platforms. An estimated 119 million hours of combined gameplay has been amassed in the same frame time, and by basic calculations means each player has managed an average of 17 hours for the week - quite impressive.
The numbers are not shocking though, as the open beta for the game registered a total of 9.7 million players over less than a week. This does, however, beg the question: What happened to the other 2.7 million players from the beta stats? While that remains a bit of a mystery, it's clear FPS fans cannot get enough of Overwatch.
