Reports suggest plans for the Essential Phone 2 have been scraped
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 25 May 2018 | Categories: newsIt looks as if the run of the Essential Phone is done and dusted, with reports from Bloomberg suggesting that plans to manufacture a follow up device have been cancelled. Furthermore, the Essential company is also going up for sale, although it's unclear how far along in the process they are.
Bloomberg notes that an estimated 150 000 units of the Essential Phone were sold since its debut in select markets in August last year. The publication also points out that Essential will not get out of the mobile business altogether, but would rather serve up the manufacture and design of Essential-branded devices to another company, with Foxconn reportedly being touted.
While the release of the Essential Phone 2 has been pushed aside, the company may still be developing a smart home product, with engineers shifting their focus to the new device. As such, we could potentially see a Essential Speaker or something similar in future.
Essential has not officially confirmed the reports, but a recent statement given to The Verge seems to all but do so. "We always have multiple products in development at the same time and we embrace canceling some in favour of the ones we think will be bigger hits. We are putting all of our efforts towards our future, game-changing products, which include mobile and home products," a spokesperson noted.
