One would think that an international news agency knows all about media embargoes, but it seems like Reuters might have made a slip-up. The Yonhap News Agency in Korea reports Reuters will be banned from the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics after wiring photos of the opening ceremony without permission, according to the Olympic organising committee.

The photos depicted the Olympic cauldron being lit during a practice run conducted last Sunday at the Olympic Main Stadium. This moment is usually the highlight of the ceremony and signifies the start to Olympic proceedings, and is usually kept under wraps for a big reveal.

For their sins, Reuters have been barred from reporting or taking pictures from the opening ceremony. The photographer responsible also had his media accreditation revoked. PetaPixel reports that Reuters took down the infringing photos after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the PyeongChang organising committee protested. The IOC also requested that all South Korean media companies which have posted the images take them down.

The PyeongChang organising committee noted that they will continue to enforce embargoes on both the opening and closing ceremony, so hopefully there won’t be further mishaps.
