RoboCop is returning, and it’s South African/Canadian Neill Blomkamp tagged to direct. That’s certainly the best news fans of the franchise could have asked for, since who else but Blomkamp would be able to add that satirical edge that Paul Verhoeven so wonderfully wove into the first film?

Deadline reports that the new movie will be titled RoboCop Returns, and it would seem like Blomkamp’s movie will line-up with Verhoeven’s 1987 classic, rather than 2014’s RoboCop remake.

Ed Neumeier, who co-wrote the original’s script and actually wrote the story for the new movie ages ago (it’s being rewritten), will be producing the movie this time round. He says, " There's been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it's a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind,"

The fact that it’s being kept close to the original can only be a good thing. Talking to Deadline, Blomkamp seems to be also in the right frame of mind regarding this, stating “The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid. I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here.”

As for when to expect the title, well that’s anyone’s guess at this stage, but hopefully Blomkamp’s really awesome Oats Studios projects will be continued. Having said that, Robocop will certainly leave District 9 fans waiting for a follow-up rather frustrated.
