Robotech movie linked to James Wan
By Staff Writer 30 April 2015 | Categories: newsIf you lived in SA during the eighties, you might remember Robotech being broadcasted in the afternoons on SABC, one of the hottest sci-fi anime at the time. Good news then for all the old fans of the series, since Deadline reports that a new live-action movie might just be in the works from Sony Pictures.
While things are still in the “early discussion” phase, said to take the helm is director James Wan. Wan is of course fresh of the success of box office smash Furious 7, while also known for the original Saw and The Conjuring and Insidious franchises. He is also linked to DC’s upcoming Aquaman movie.
This is not the first time that talks about a live-action Robotech movie have emerged, with previous mentions of Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio linked to the lead role.
The Robotech anime we watched in SA, produced by Harmony Gold USA, was actually a combination of three different Japanese mecha anime series. It revolved around an alien ship that crashed to earth, providing us with some unknown E.T. technology. This was used to build some awesome mecha to fend off alien invasions of Earth.
While we don’t want to say that kids programming went backwards from there, have a look at the Robotech intro below for some instant nostalgia. To take you even deeper into the 80s, can you remember the intro for Battle of the Planets perhaps?
