Intellectual property is a prized possession in the information age, and the latest to be accused of falling afoul of copyright is none other than the BBC. The latest is that Rocksteady Games, via Take-Two Interactive, has filed suit against the venerated news organisation, for its plans to produce a 90 minute movie based on Grand Theft Auto’s development. Apparently, the Beeb is being accused of trademark infringement.

Grand Theft Auto has generated a fair share of controversy over the years, but at least its grand larceny premise takes place in a virtual world. Riding on the coattails of an established, and highly popular trademark, is apparently overstepping.

Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled ‘Game Changer’ as it relates to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto video game series.

In a statement, Rockstar Games explained that it had attempted multiple times to resolve the matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. “It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary.” The film, which began filming in April, stars Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton; it though, may meet a fate shared by many in the game on which it is based, suffering an untimely demise.
