With a number of manufacturers now going edge to edge with their flagship phone displays, it has brought up the same question time and time again - when will the fingerprint reader be embedded into the display? It's something we're yet to see pulled off, with most manufacturers shifting the reader to the side or back instead.

As for which company will be the first to do so, it appears Samsung is preparing to answer the challenge. Unfortunately though, we'll have to wait until next year as it's a feature touted for the Galaxy Note 9.

According to 9to5Google, a report from industry analyst KGI Securities suggests the South Korean manufacturer's 2018 phablet will place the fingerprint reader in-display, as opposed to the back.

While that news does make us intrigued to see how it's pulled off in the Galaxy Note 9, it now makes a few features for the Note 8, Galaxy S9 and S9+ a bit more certain. To that end, all three devices will likely have Infinity Displays, but will keep the fingerprint reader on the rear, which is currently the case with the S8 and S8+.

With Apple also struggling to make an embedded fingerprint reader a reality, according to KGI, it should be interesting to see which of the pair can bring it to market first, and how effectively they do so.
