Snapchat releases update to create custom geofilters
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 3 July 2017 | Categories: newsLast week, Snapchat released a fairly innocuous new feature called Snap Map. As it turns out, Snap Map has proved quite divisive, as it allows Snapchat users to see precisely where their friends are at any time, without their knowledge. As such, people are more than a little freaked out by this feature.
Snapchat is not done there with the new updates though, debuting a tool this week that will enable users to create custom geofilters from their mobile device. The ability to create unique filters has existed on the platform for a little over a year now, but was limited by the fact that one had to log into Snapchat's online web client to do so.
Custom geofilters will cost you, however, with the creation of one for a specific location estimated at $6, and covers an area of roughly 1860 m2 for up to one hour. There are options to increase the range of the geofilter, as well as for how long it stays online, but pricing in this regard has not been detailed.
Still rolling out to users, it should prove interesting to see if this new feature proves as divisive as the Snap Map one.
