Star Wars: The Force Awakens has amassed $50 million in ticket sales to date
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 20 November 2015 | Categories: newsThe Force Awakens' release is now less than a month away. 18 December to be more precise. Ticket sales in the US opened up a few weeks ago, following the release of the full-length second trailer, and the Hollywood Reporter says the film has amassed more than $50 million in ticket sales to date.
To put that in perspective, it doubles the mark set by The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. Interesting to discover, is that a third of sales were for IMAX tickets, which is the go-to move in our books, especially for a first time viewing of the film. It is also on track to beat another record in the United States, with an anticipated $300 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend. This would usurp the current record holder, Jurassic World, which made $208.8 million earlier in the year.
While the box office success of The Force Awakens seems a foregone conclusion, given the franchise's fanatical following, its critical acclaim is still up for debate. The film is not being screened for critics or the media prior to its mainstream release, as its producers may have learned from the pitfalls of the prequel films.
Nevertheless, this is one we're anxiously awaiting.
