Gearing up for a northern hemisphere summer, Puma has released two products aimed to keep runners cool. The first is the IGNITE 3 PWRCool running shoes, containing a breathable open-mesh upper and what Puma calls DRI-FREEZE collar lining. According to the company this instantly cools your feet on contact, and extends to the sock liner for maximum ventilation.

As with most of Puma’s running shoes, IGNITE foam is present for the midsole, while the outsole comprises of Performance Rubber compound, which the company notes provides grip while also being abrasive resistant.

For those wondering, the bright colourway these shoes are available is called Orange Clown Fish-French Blue, and although there should be a Finding Nemo joke in there somewhere, it’s Monday. Usain Bolt, though, had this to say: “Living in Kingston, I’m used to running in really hot weather but there are days when the heat is just unbearable. The IGNITE 3 PWRCool can handle this, no sweat. Tried and tested.”

Currently available in shops, a pair of IGNITE 3 PWRCool will set you back just south of R2 000.

Those seeing the need to make the step-up from training in race T-shirts might want to consider Puma’s PWRCool shirt. The PWRCool fabrics used is said to maximise moisture transport and breathability, with Puma claiming the Vent Thermo-R System interacts with the body’s microclimate, opening to help release heat and moisture build up during workouts. When body heat is reduced, the vents close again. As with all good running shirts, it has technology that draws sweat away from skin to help keep athletes dry and comfortable, at least till you’re really sweating.

Puma’s PWRCool shirt retails for R800 from PUMA stores and selected retailers nationwide.
