Towards the end of last year, the Mr D app incorporated a PnP Groceries section on their platform. This means that apart from the usual takeaways the app is best known for, you can now also order your groceries from Pick n Pay.

We’ve got to test the groceries option through a voucher provided by Mr D and found it works like a charm, as one would expect. Once you open the app, the groceries section is found as an icon at the bottom of the app. Click on it and it shows current deals, previous items bought, or the option to shop by isle. Scroll further and you’re shown more idea-driven options, such as Effortless Entertaining, Winter Liquor Cabinet and, our favourite, Snackadium - snacks and drinks for the big game.

It's easy to find what you are looking for, with the option to pick a backup product if they don’t have your first option in stock. The Mr D app allows you to save your Smart Shopper card, with the ability to also earn eBucks from your purchases. And ordering was quick - from the point where we paid for groceries to when it was delivered by Mr D (in JHB), it took about 45 minutes - not bad in our books.

So how does the Mr D app compare in pricing from Pick n Pay’s own ASAP! app? From what we can tell they are working off the same price list, even on the current specials. There were some slight deviations for what’s available on each (different banana options on ASAP!, Sihle’s Brew ground coffee only available on Mr D), but overall it’s much of a muchness.

Mr D does seem to be quite generous on discounts though, which might actually tip the scales of preference. We regularly received Mr D emails (from Megan) which offered R100 off a R450 basket promos, compared to ASAP! that often provides free delivery codes. Talking of which, delivery fee on both is R35, with options to tip your delivery person also available. We liked the fact that you don't have to set your delivery address each time you open the app as on ASAP!. That said, it does seem like ASAP! has more products on offer, while also being slighly quicker to load different sections.

If you do use the Mr D to order your fast food, it’s definitely worth it to now also order groceries, especially with the discount vouchers that they provide. If you don't, you now have another reason to download the Mr D app.

The Mr D app is available for Android, iOS and Huawei devices.
