Forget battling in teams within the confines of an MMORPG arena, the Mortal Kombat Cup pits gamer against gamer in a mano e mano style tournament befitting the MK franchise. As the 14 April release date for Mortal Kombat X is only a week away, the Mortal Kombat Cup is set to land in South Africa, allowing local gamers to put their mettle to the test.

This Mortal Kombat tournament is being organised with the help of Ster Kinekor, with qualifying events being held in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The tournament will begin in May, where the qualifying stages will whittle down the thousands of competitors down to 16 finalists. The grand final for the MK Cup in SA will then take place on 6 June, where one finalist will be named South Africa's MK champion. With Johannesburg playing host to the final, the top three finalists will share a combined prize money total of R30 000, as well as a number of prizes being handed out spectators.

But that's merely the start of the MK Cup winner's journey, as he or she will walk away with a 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 console, as well as automatically qualify for a seat in the Grand Final which will take place in France, at the Japan Expo!

If you still needed any convincing to get your hands on Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm has debuted the launch trailer for the game. It features the talents of System of A Down bassist Shavo Odadjian, who provides the soundtrack for this trailer. As expected, there is plenty of bone crushing action to enjoy, interspliced with shots of the story mode's key characters.
