The best ads for the 2016 Rio Olympics
By Staff Writer 8 August 2016 | Categories: newsThe Rio Olympics are in full swing, and as such, it's time for a host of adverts and videos to arrive, making you feel ashamed at just how lazy and out of shape you've become. Below some of the best ads for the 2016 Olympics we could find so far.
Visa Carpool
Certainly the ad that features the most comprehensive range of world athletes is Visa’s Carpool spot. With nine Olympians onboard, including our own Wayde van Niekerk (catch him whizzing by at 0:32), and narration done by actor Morgan Freeman, official Rio 2016 partner Visa clearly didn’t spare the horses when it came to cost. It’s a fun ad that contrasts nicely against more serious offerings, including another Visa one, called The Heart, below.
Wayde van Niekerk: Speed Takes Dreams
Flying the flag high for South Africa, and a medal hopeful in both the 200 metre and 400 metre events, Wayde van Niekerk might just be at the peak of his powers during this Olympics. Featuring in yet another ad, he talks about his preparation for Rio in this Adidas video below.
Nike: Unlimited You
While not strictly a Rio Olympics ad, Nike’s Unlimited You features many athletes that will be competing at the Games. The best part of the ad, however, is the narration from Oscar Isaac (X-Men: Apocalypse), who finds that he can’t quite keep up with what the athletes are dishing out.
Panasonic South Africa: #MakeMeBetter campaign
Panasonic South Africa is getting into the Olympics action with its #MakeMeBetter campaign, featuring SA 100 metre men's record holder Akani Simbine and long jumper Ruswahl Samaai. The athletes received much need sponsorship from Panasonic South Africa, and it’s great to see the Japanese company getting behind local Olympians, especially since it’s one of the official partners of the games.
Rio 2016 Olympic Games
If you’re still not in the Olympic spirit, try out this commercial for the 2016 Games itself. Here the real star of the show is Rio de Janeiro, with the ad capturing the sights and sounds of the city, sans of course the crime and polluted water.
Gatorade: The Boy Who Learned to Fly
For this year's Games, as he has been for the previous two, Usain Bolt will be the main event on the track, competing with a very fired up Justin Gatlin. Gatorade made an awesome animated video chronicling his journey while growing up, told in whimsical fashion. While not strictly an ad, it does show the power of storytelling in getting a brand’s message across.
Nike: Unlimited Ashton Eaton
Another athlete with big expectations in Rio is the USA's Ashton Eaton. A world record holder in the Decathlon, and perhaps the best all round athlete on the planet, watch Eaton go to work in the video below.
Adidas. Mayra Aguiar: Speed Takes Willpower
Jumping to the brand with the three stripes, this next video focuses on Judo at this year's game. It features Brazilian Mayra Aguiar, who'll be hoping to claim gold in her home country. If the video's anything to go by, she's not to be messed with, especially not high above the city.
