The cinema experience is thriving - Nu Metro

Cinema operator Nu Metro Theatres recently hosted a showcase for media and key stakeholders at its Hyde Park Corner complex. The event underlined the enduring appeal and innovative future of the cinema experience, from VIP options to cutting-edge ScreenX cinemas.
Nu Metro noted it has significantly expanded its reach, now operating 20 cinema complexes across the continent, including new venues in Maputo, Mozambique and Lusaka, Zambia. Further expansion is planned for 2026 with additions in Tygervalley and Mimosa Mall. Moreover, recent acquisitions of sites such as Bedford Square, Gateway, Cavendish and Riverside have cemented the group's position as a market leader.
A highly anticipated innovation is ScreenX, Africa’s first panoramic viewing experience, which uses multi-projection technology to create a 270-degree screen. This will soon be exclusively available at Nu Metro Gateway.
Data presented by cinema advertising sales company, Cinevation, indicates a resurgence in cinema attendance, with over 2.1 million regular filmgoers each month. More than 4.6 million South Africans visit cinemas up to six times a year, challenging the notion that the habit is declining post-pandemic. Having said that, Menen Muthial, business analyst at Nu Metro, noted that yearly attendance figures have not yet caught up to pre-Covid figures.
Discussions at the showcase focused on three critical areas: ticket pricing, content diversity and support for South African films. Strategic partnerships with financial institutions including Absa, Nedbank and Momentum were highlighted, showcasing initiatives to make cinema more accessible through subsidy programmes and loyalty club concessions.
"Cinema tickets for a family of four are now more affordable than they were in 2019," stated Muthial, dispelling beliefs that ticket prices are prohibitive. It needs to be noted ticket prices referenced here are those purchased through discounts offered by Nu Metro’s partners.
Beyond a strong lineup of upcoming Hollywood blockbusters, Nu Metro is also placing a renewed emphasis on homegrown talent. Andries Basson, operations executive for Nu Metro Films, affirmed a commitment to premium local productions and robust partnerships with South African production houses. The company plans bigger premieres, tailored events and enhanced recognition for the country’s creative community.
Guests at the event enjoyed a bespoke culinary spread curated by executive chef David M, who oversees Nu Metro’s gourmet menu offerings, designed to elevate the VIP cinema experience.
The overarching message from Nu Metro was clear: the focus is on the complete experience, not just watching films. The cinema group noted that through strategic investments and a clear vision, it believes cinema is thriving.
