They might have our number at Go and Starcraft, but when it comes to basketball, LeBron and co. still have the upper hand over the robots. At least for now, since as with most things, the machines are slowly but surely making headway, as the following videos show.
According to The Verge, engineers at Japanese company Toyota worked in their free time on a robot that can shoot hoops, although the one they designed doesn’t quite have the footwork to match. Standing static, the robot beat its human counterparts from Alvark Tokyo with free throws, making 100% of its shots.
The Japanese news source reporting on the shoot-off noted that the robot was trained by AI. Most of the shots taken looked pretty close to the basket, so we’re wondering how the robot would do when it comes to three-pointers, perhaps against the likes of a Stephen Curry?
Check the videos to see Mr. Robot playing a very boring brand of basketball.
