Back in May this year, Twitter confirmed reports that it would be making several changes to its 140-character limit. These included no longer counting attachments (i.e. Images, GIFs, videos or polls), as well as quoted tweets as part of the 140 characters allowed per public Tweet.

Heading into the fourth month since the announcement was made, The Verge is reporting that the new changes could take effect from 19 September next week. Added to the attachments and quote overhaul, Twitter will also exclude handles from the count when replying, provided the handle is at the start of the message.

These changes will certainly be welcome, but whether or not it will improve the social media platforms popularity remains to be seen. Twitter is not short of active users, but it has seen a significant decline in new signups, with the likes of Instagram and Snapchat proving far more pervasive.
