Uber launches debit card in MexicoBy Robin-Leigh Chetty 24 October 2016 | Categories: news
Love or hate it, Uber is here to stay in South Africa. The ride sharing app has proven immensely popular in our local metros, but still has its shortcomings. One in particular was only being able to sign and pay via a credit card. Uber addressed the latter by offering cash payments, which opens up the app to far more users. A current development in Mexico, however, could mean even more Uber passengers in the future.
Together with Mastercard and online bank Bankaool, Uber has launched a debit card for its Mexican customers. According to Uber, the card is not limited to ride sharing, and will work for in-store purchases, as well as online retailers and ATM withdrawals.
Uber Mexico has not detailed how many users it will make the debit card available too, but sign up is already active on Bankaool's site. While no mention of extended the experiment to other countries has been disclosed, such a system could potentially work here in SA too.
