Transgender issues have come into sharper focus this year, gripping the world of sports with Caitlyn Jenner. Now gaming appears to be joining the fray as Ubisoft has detailed its first transgender character for the Assassin's Creed franchise.

The new character, Ned Wynert, is joining the ranks of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, playing a supporting role as one of the quest givers. Eurogamer recently spoke to the game's creative director Marc-Alexis Cóte, who stated that the character will not have an effect on the game's storyline.

Cóte also noted, "inclusiveness is something that's super important for us as a team." As such, Wynert will be able to interact with either Evie Frye or her twin brother Jacob Frye, depending on which protagonist gamers choose.

While the inclusion of this periphery character might not do anything to further push the issues surrounding transgender rights, it should prove interesting to see how the gaming community reacts to it, especially as the recent negative activities aimed at women in gaming have truly blighted it.
