Before Zack Snyder (300, Batman v Superman) tried to adapt Watchmen into a movie, the Alan Moore graphic novel was considered one of the best pieces of work the medium has ever seen. Now, another adaptation is on the way, with HBO greenlighting a pilot, as well as additional scripts for a Watchmen TV series from Damon Lindelof.
The producer has worked on other notable series like Lost and The Leftovers, giving him a solid enough track record to try and bring Moore's nuanced work to life on the small screen. While we're yet to get any formal announcement of its arrival from HBO, Lindelof has taken to Instagram to drum up a bit of hype for the project.
The Instagram post features the bottom half of a miniature statue, with the words "IN GRATITUDE" featured on a plaque below it. For those who fondly remember Moore's graphic novel, it's a reference to the statue that was erected to honour the original Nite Owl, Hollis Mason.
At this stage, HBO only asking for a pilot from Lindelof, so whether a full series will come from it remains to be seen. The graphic novel's complex themes and storytelling, however, might lend itself well to a TV series, rather than a movie. With HBO's popular Game of Thrones coming to an end soon, this Watchmen series could very well help fill the void for the American broadcaster.
