Ever considered building your own iPhone? We thought it could not be done, but an intrepid maker actually constructed an iPhone 6S 16 GB from scratch. Granted, he was able to trawl the markets of Shenzhen, China, widely considered the technology manufacturing capital of the world.

In a video, posted below, ex-software engineer Scotty Allen goes through the process of all that’s needed to make your own iPhone. On his website, Strange Parts, he notes the reason he chose the 6S and not a newer iPhone 7, was because he could work off the design of the 6S he already owns, while parts for the 7 are pretty hard to come by.

It’s fascinating to see how Allen sourced different components for the logic board, screen and battery, starting off with the shell of the device. Allen has always had a dash of the unconventional, stating “From riding a $120 bike through Laos and Cambodia, to building and racing land yachts, to planting coral underwater in Borneo, I’ve always sought out the weird, wonderful, and out-of-the-way thing to do.”

If you have 23 minutes to spare, you can watch Allen at work, pull on your cigar and finally utter Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith’s famous words: “I love it when a plan comes together.”
