Wikipedia adds page previews to its platform
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 23 April 2018 | Categories: newsIf you start to do some searching on Wikipedia this week, there should be a new addition to the website popping up. More specifically, page previews for links are starting to roll out on Wikipedia, with the company mentioning that this new feature is designed to help users who often need to open up multiple tabs while browsing.
It also has the added benefit of letting users get a glimpse into whether a link or page will be useful or a worthwhile read. With Wikipedia, much like YouTube, Reddit and Facebook, turning into a bit of a rabbit hole of distraction at times, the page preview feature could address that.
The feature can be toggled on and off, should users find it a bit of a nuisance when scrolling over paragraphs with their cursor, but according to their testing, most people opted to leave the feature active.
Whether or not page previews become a mainstay of the Wikipedia experience, will depend on how useful people find it in the coming months.
