At the start of July, Microsoft very publicly stated its intent for Windows 10 to feature on one billion devices within the first two years on its release. Well, D-Day landed this past Wednesday, and after the first 24 hours, a reported 14 million devices already sport the new OS.

Although the finer details of those numbers have not been fully detailed, we suspect that a large portion of upgrades came from Windows Insider program members, whose numbers total roughly five million. Now our math might be a little fuzzy considering it's Friday, but given the current rate, almost 7 million per day, Microsoft should easily make their one billion mark within the next 24 months.

Microsoft's efforts are also supported by the fact that the upgrade to Windows 10 is free for all users that tout a genuine copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Now the job for Microsoft is ensuring the the roll out of upgrades happen relatively smoothly, with the ability to address any user concerns or errors with speed. This is a fact that Windows marketing head, Yusuf Mehdi, is abundantly aware of.

"While we now have more than 14 million devices running Windows 10, we still have many more upgrades to go before we catch up to each of you that reserved your upgrade," said Mehdi in a recent Windows Blog post. He added, "Rest assured we are working 24×7 to continue the upgrade process and are prioritising the quality of your upgrade experience over anything else."

It should prove interesting to see whether Microsoft can keep up this momentum in coming months, but the early feeling is that Windows 10 is on the right track.
