YouTube launched its paid subscription ad-free service, YouTube Red, a few weeks ago. Apart from merely doing away with pesky ads for a monthly payment of $10 and up, YouTube said plans were in the works for different types of content to be created for YouTube Red not freely available on the standard version. Now, reports suggest that content will be streamed movies and TV shows, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The move would make sense, considering Amazon, Netflix and Hulu are currently the go-to streaming services worldwide, rivalling YouTube for the highly valued screen time of online users. The Wall Street Journal's sources say YouTube's executives have met with various movie studios to discuss the porting of their content over to the YouTube Red platform.

Although which exact movie studios are in talks has not been confirmed, it is believed that YouTube Red's streamed content would focus solely on new material. As such, instead of heading to the cinemas to see the latest comic book superhero movie, YouTube Red users could simply pay to watch it from their PC, notebook or mobile device.

While no details are set in stone just yet, such a move makes logical sense if YouTube wishes to make the most of Red.
