While most government departments are continually slagged off for being slow and incompetent, the South African Revenue Service continues to be one of the most well oiled money-extracting machines world-wide.

And they are making things even easier; as from the 2008 tax year, they will gleefully tax the first 18000 km of your travel as private mileage, unless you have a valid log book.

MobileTripSheet is a mobile (you can install the software on both phones and PDAs) and web based application that allows you to record all your traveled kilometers, both business and private. MobileTripSheet is a lot more than just a log of basic travel information. You can create exact time stamps of arrivals and departures, log fuel and other purchases and export data into Excel. Here’s a maths lesson: If you travel 29 000km and only 10 000km was for private travel then you’ll actually be losing out on over R24 000 in claimable tax.

Get MobileTripSheet for R299 from www.holton.co.za or call H&A on 011- 789-6181 for more info.

PROS
It is installed on your cellphone so it???s always with you when you???re on the move.
CONS
Backing up to a web profile rather than an app on your PC means you need a connection.
