AMD unveils Radeon HD 7770 and HD 7750 GPUs
By Hanleigh Daniels 15 February 2012 | Categories: newsLast year AMD set a Guinness World Record for the “Highest Frequency of a Computer Processor,” by overclocking its 8-core AMD FX desktop processor. Now the company has laid claim to another performance mantle with its latest GPUs (graphics processing units) - the new Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition and Radeon HD 7750.
According to the company the Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition is the first graphics card equipped with a reference engine clock that breaks the one gigahertz barrier, making it the world’s first 1 GHz GPU.
The Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition sports a 1000 MHz engine clock, 1 GB of GDDR5 RAM and a 1125 MHz memory clock, whilst the Radeon HD 7750 features a 800 MHz engine clock, 1 GB GDDR5 memory and a 1125 MHz memory clock.
Both of the new Radeon HD 7700 series GPUs boast AMD’s new Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture, which according to the company will assist is boosting their performance as well as their energy efficiency.
AMD believes that its Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition will deliver an exceptional gaming experience at under 75 watts, meaning that this card won’t require its own separate power connector.
The Radeon HD 7700 series is available in the US as of today, with pricing for the Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1 GB kicking off at $159 (around R1226) and $109 (about R840) for the AMD Radeon HD 7750 1 GB. No local release info is available yet.
“We were first to 40 nm, first to 28 nm and now we offer the world’s first GPU at 1 GHz; this is a milestone for the graphics industry,” said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager of the GPU Division within AMD. “AMD continues to deliver superior performance, rich features and world-class power efficiency – we never stop innovating.”
