Acer announces Iconia Tab A200 tablet
By Ryan Noik 2 December 2011 | Categories: newsAcer today announced its latest Iconia Tab, the A200. The 10.1” tablet, which will ship with Android Honeycomb 3.2, is slated to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment at the beginning of next year. The A200 is the larger sibling of Acer's 7" A100, which was launched in South Africa at the beginning of November.
If you were hoping that this would be Acer’s Tegra 3 tablet though, you would be disappointed. The tablet will instead sport a Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core 1 GHz processor along with 1 GB of RAM.
Other features, which we have become accustomed to seeing by now, include a 1280 x 800 screen resolution and two megapixel front facing camera. Somewhat less common though, is the addition of a full-size USB port for hooking up other devices, and a MicroSD slot.
The company explained that the Iconia Tab A200 will feature Screenshot, which quickly captures web images, articles, Google Maps and smiling faces from video calls. Screenshot can be used in any app on any screen for maximum convenience.
According to Engadget, the tablet will be available in either titanium gray or metallic red, and will feature the ‘Acer Ring,’ which is a multitasking manager that provides shortcuts to Google Maps, screenshot functions and other apps. Additionally, Acer’s SocialJogger, which consolidates Facebook and Twitter into a centralized location, is also onboard.
Family affordability that makes ‘cents’
Although the company has yet to specify prices, the company is billing the A200 as “the tablet for sharing good times with family at an affordable price.”

By this point in the year, we have to admit to having become a little jaded about Tegra 2 tablet launches, which makes the “affordability” tag the most alluring aspect of the announcement. We are curious to find out more what that means though, in rands and cents terms, and do wonder whether it would be in a significantly affordable category, such as a Tegra 2 tablet that comes in at the R3000 or below mark. There's no indiciation as yet with regards to local availability.
In related news, Acer also recently announced its first ultrabook, the Acer Aspire S3.
